Cosmetic Enhancements
Chemical peels have proven to be successful in improving
the appearance and quality of the skin. Although they are
commonly performed in spas and in other non-medical
environments, these procedures should be performed under
medical guidance and supervision in order to achieve maximum
benefit and safety.
The procedure involves a chemical solution that is applied
to the skin resulting in mild redness and a tingling
sensation. The top layer of skin cells gently peel off
allowing a smoother and less blotchy skin to emerge. The
result - a more youthful and healthier appearance.
A number of skin conditions can be improved with a chemical
peel:
- Superficial lines and wrinkles, particularly around
the mouth
- Various hyperpigmentation problems
- Acne scars and other mild scars
- Sun-damaged skin
- Age spots
- Freckles
The most common peel is the mild glycolic or alpha
hydroxyl acid AHA peel (sometimes called lunchtime peel).
After this peel the skin may be slightly red with some dry
patches for a short period of time. The result is a skin
with improved color and texture, thus restoring a more
youthful appearance.
The stronger TCA (trichloroacetic acid) and phenol peels
produce redness and scaling for up to 1 week, and is
associated with greater improvements in the appearance of
the skin.
While laser resurfacing has replaced the chemical peel to
some extent in recent years, Dr. Weksberg feels the chemical
peel still has certain advantages over laser peeling. There
are also some drawbacks associated with laser resurfacing
that are not always associated with chemical peels. These
include the lingering residual redness of the skin that can
sometimes be a side effect of laser resurfacing.
Dr. Weksberg will be happy to discuss the advantages of the
chemical peel with you during your consultation.
