Chemical Peels

Dr. Weksberg Servicing Toronto and the GTA, services are for Canadian citizens only.

What is a Chemical Peel ?

A chemical peel is a procedure used to improve the colour, quality, and texture of the facial skin using a chemical solution. There are a number of chemical peel solutions that help to remove dead skin cells and stimulate new collagen formation. The regenerated skin looks refreshed. It is smoother, skin tone is more even and balanced, and less wrinkled.

What types of Chemical Peels does Dr. Weksberg offer ?

At The Weksberg Centre for Cosmetic Dermatology Toronto we currently offer 4 types of Chemical Peels, they are as follows:

Azelan Peel

The Azelan Peel is specifically formulated to assist in resolving and controlling active acne, teenage and adult acne, hormonally induced acne. The Azelan Peel is especially indicated for Oily/Acne prone skin types, treating acne in its different manifestations and elimination of epidermic hyperpigmentation that result from Active Acne.

Active ingredients are: Azelaic Acid 20% + Salicylic Acid. 20% Salicylic Acid is a beta hydroxy acid with keratolytic and comedolytic action. Efficient in correcting hyperkeratosis, skin flaking, sebhorreic dermatitis, acne and photo aging. Besides regulating sebhorrea, salicylic acid has antiseptic, bacteriostatic and fungicide properties. Azelaic Acid is a dicarboxylic acid that acts as an antimicrobial against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermis. Also a good antioxidant and favors re-establishment of normal keratinization.

Piruvex Peel

Piruvex Peel is indicated for the treatment of skins with aging signs such as fine, medium and deep wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. It is also useful for treating acne, actinic and fine seborrheic keratosis. After a Piruvex Peel application, skin tone, texture and luminosity are greatly improved.

Active Ingredients are: Pyruvic Acid 40% + Lactic Acid 10%. Pyruvic Acid is an alpha-ketoacid found naturally in vinegar and honey. Presents keratolytic, antimicrobial and sebostatic characteristics. Its high acidity and low molecular size enable it to easily penetrate into the skin particularly in lipophilic areas. Provides good results in the treatment of aged skin, improves aspect of acneic scars, actinic keratosis and alterations in skin texture. Lactic Acid is an alphahydroxy acid with a lower molecular weight and keratolytic power encouraging epidermis and dermis thickening. Activates collagen and elastin formation and increases hyaluronic acid concentration in the extracellular matrix.

Melanostop Peel

The Melanostop Peel is specifically designed to treat hyperpigmentation of all origins. These combinations of acids are exclusively formulated to inhibit tyrosinase production and assist in reversing the appearance of solar lentigens, melasma, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and sun damage. Melanostop Peel is only to be done in a physician's office.

Active Ingredients are: Azelaic Acid 20% + Resorcinol 10% + Phytic Acid 6% Azelaic Acid is a saturated dicarboxylic acid used for treating melasma due to its tyrosinase inhibitor effect. A good antioxidant and favors keratinization of the skin. Resorcinol is a phenolic derivative presenting keratolytic action and capacity to precipitate skin proteins. Improves skin texture and combats hyperpigmentation. Phytic Acid is a powerful chelant, depigmentant antioxidant agent. A strong acid which when applied to the skin causes superficial chemo exfoliation. Inhibits tyrosinase production and reduces melanin formation. Provides great antioxidant protection and reduces harmful UV ray effects.

Glycolic or AHA Peel

Glycolic acid peels are the mildest of the peel formulas and produces light peels for treatment of fine wrinkles, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. Alpha hydroxy acids can also be mixed with a facial wash or cream in lesser concentrations as part of a daily skin-care regimen to improve the skin's texture.

Active ingredients are: AHA’s ranging in strength from 20% to 70%

How are Chemical Peels performed ?

At The Weksberg Centre for Cosmetic Dermatology in Toronto the first step is a cleansing & degreasing of the skin’s surface to remove oils, and dead skin cells. The recommended chemical peel solution is then applied evenly on the skin for a predetermined period of time (usually 3 to 5 minutes). The treatment area is then rinsed at the end of the treatment time to remove the chemical peel agent.

During the peel some redness will appear along with a slight stinging feeling. This is not uncomfortable and lasts only for a short period of time (1 to 2 days). You can expect to have some peeling and sloughing of the skin for 3 to 7 days following your treatment. It is very important that during this time you do not pick or rub the skin or it may cause scarring.

After the peel is completed at The Weksberg Centre for Cosmetic Dermatology in Toronto your technician will apply a moisturizer to your skin followed by an SPF. The technician will make product recommendations for use at home for your skin in order to maximize the benefit of your peel.

In order to achieve maximum results of this procedure for most patients we recommend starting with six consecutive applications with a two week interval between treatments. An application every six months is recommended as maintenance thereafter.
