Cosmelan® Depigmentation Treatment Program
Skin aging caused by chronic sun exposure, and facial
blemishes due to excessive pigmentation caused by melanin,
have become very common problems. The dark blemishes often
called “liver spots or lentigines” are
widespread but are more cosmetic concern on the hands and
face. Other common causes of pigmentation are “Melasma”
and “Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation”. These
conditions are associated with extra production of a skin
pigment known as “melanin”.
It is possible to reduce the melanin pigment with a
treatment that has a direct effect on the formation process
of this melanin pigment. The Cosmelan Depigmentation
Program is based on the inhibition of tyrosinase,
a basic enzyme in the melanin formation process. Several of
the substances present in the Cosmelan formula act to
block this enzyme, thereby helping to reduce the skin
pigment.
The Cosmelan Depigmentation Program involves an in
office treatment followed by a home treatment program.
During the in-office treatment the technician will apply “Cosmelan
1 cream” as a mask. This mask will remain on the
patient's face for a predetermined number of hours, usually
between 5-10 hours. Directions will be given to the patient
as to when to wash off this mask at home. Patients should
always follow the Home Treatment instruction sheet provided
by the technician. The home part of the program involves
applying “Cosmelan 2 cream” and “Hydra-vital
factor K cream” to the face one, twice, or three times
per day as directed by our technician. This home treatment
will work best if it is continued for at least several
months.
In mild cases some patients may skip the Cosmelan 1 mask
treatment, and start with the home application of
Cosmelan 2 cream. This may be applied over the entire
face or to only to localized areas (spot treatment).
The Cosmelan depigmentation treatment offers a series
of major advantages. The treatment is suitable for all skin
types. The treatment can be started at any time of the year.
The treatment will help to improve the overall texture of
the skin as well. The treatment has a very high safety
margin. The active ingredients in the Cosmelan
program include Azelaic acid, Phytic acid,
Kojic acid and vitamin C.
