It is derived from tissue engineering in the laboratory using human dermis (skin) as its source. Because of this, the risk of allergy reaction is exceedingly rare. Consequently, patients do not require a pre-treatment skin test, which means for the first time ever our office can offer same day treatment with CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast.

Prior to the release of CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast collagen treatment was only available in the form of Zyderm I®, Zyderm II®, and Zyplast®. Because they are derived from bovine sources, skin testing and a 28 day waiting period is required. These products are still in widespread usage and remain an excellent choice for treatment. At our office Zyderm and Zyplast are still frequently used.

CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast can be used to treat facial wrinkles on the forehead, glabellar frown lines, crow’s feet, smoker’s lines, nasolabial lines, oral commissures, scars, and other soft tissue defects. Lip augmentation results are excellent. These treatments may last up to 6 months, depending on the area treated and the amount of material used.

The original collagens, Zyderm and Zyplast, have been used safely for over 20 years and have an excellent safety record. The new forms of collagen, CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast, have been used safely for 15 years in burn victims and skin grafting. All the collagen products, both old and new, are formulated with lidocaine (local anesthetic) to minimize patient discomfort.

Dr. Weksberg was one of the first physicians to use CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast for treating patients. He has enthusiastically added CosmoDerm and CosmoPlast to his practice. The advantages of same day treatment using extensively tested human based collagen and with minimal discomfort will be truly beneficial for many patients.
